Visual art

The object Complexity consists of 30 cubes with an edge length of 240 mm. The cubes can be arranged as desired in a rack of 5 on 6 compartments. This results in 30! (1032) permutations for the placement of the cubes in the rack. Each cube has 6 sides and can be rotated 4 times. This results in 24 ways to place a cube in a compartment, and for each permutation of the cubes in the rack this results in 2430 different combinations of the cubes. The total number of variations of the object is therefore 30! multiplied by 2430 which gives approximately the number 1073. For comparison, the number of atoms in our galaxy (the Milky Way) is only 1067.

The frame and the cubes are made of acrylic glass and the cubes are printed with Marabu screen printing inks. The compartments of the rack are designed so that half of the cubes are 50 mm in front of the other half. Assorted together, the 30 cubes can be used to create 6 different overall images.
